Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday said the reason for recent attacks on Pia Kauma, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, was her stance on sovereignty contradicting the approach of some politicians in Europe and beyond.
Papuashvili’s comment followed after the statement of Kauma, who on Tuesday stressed the significance of national sovereignty, asserting that external forces should not determine the legitimacy of a Government.
“It is abundantly clear now why the President of OSCE PA was attacked for her intention to come to Georgia: her stance on sovereignty contradicts the approach of some politicians in Europe and beyond (and most ironically in some post-Soviet EU member countries)”, Papuashvili said.
“What the OSCE PA President said was that she respects the sovereignty of peoples to elect their own governments. This is what contemporary rules-based international order rests on, which, apparently, remains beyond comprehension for some”, he concluded.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday highlighted the impact of “liberal fascism” in the country in his comments over the postponement of a planned visit to the country by Pia Kauma.
Kobakhidze’s comments followed after Kauma on Monday said “I look forward to identifying a more suitable time to visit Georgia, when conditions will better enable constructive engagement”.
