Georgia is set to launch its first international technology hub in San Francisco, marking a significant milestone for the country's startup ecosystem, the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development on Wednesday reported. 

The hub will provide Georgian startups with greater access to international markets and investors in Silicon Valley, the world’s leading center for technology and innovation.

“In San Francisco, the first technology hub outside of Georgia will be opened, through which Georgian startup companies will be able to more easily access foreign markets and international investors in the global centre of technology and innovation, known as Silicon Valley. The technology hub will make it possible to interest global technology companies, foreign venture funds, and angel investor networks in Georgia's innovation ecosystem and attract relevant investments to the country”, the Ministry said. 

Irakli Nadareishvil, the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, noted that the United States, and specifically Silicon Valley, was a key partner for Georgia’s innovative startup ecosystem. 

“This region houses the vast majority of the world’s venture capital and intellectual resources. Establishing Georgia’s innovation hub in San Francisco is a crucial step towards strengthening our startup ecosystem”, he said. 

The tech hub, established by Georgia’s Innovation and Technology Agency (GITA) with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will operate within the premises of the Consulate General of Georgia in San Francisco. The consulate, active since 2020, plays a vital role in promoting Georgia’s innovation ecosystem and supporting Georgian startups in Silicon Valley. Through this initiative, Georgia seeks to enhance its positioning as a country with a thriving startup ecosystem on the global stage. Notably, Georgia will be the first country in its region to establish a technology hub in Silicon Valley.

Avtandil Kasradze, the Head of the Innovation and Technology Agency, noted that one of the central functions of the technology hub would be to enhance the competencies of Georgian startups. 

“This will involve mentorship programs with Silicon Valley experts, training sessions, and workshops. Additionally, the initiative will facilitate cultural exchanges to showcase Georgia’s technological potential, host cultural evenings for the tech community, and organise bilateral startup exchange programs”, Kasradze said.

The hub will focus on networking opportunities, connecting Georgian startups with potential investors, partners, and other technology startups. This will include demo days for international investors, B2B meetings, and presentations about Georgia’s innovation ecosystem. Furthermore, Georgian startups will receive business support, including legal and business consulting for entering the US market, access to office space, and a shared database of business contacts.

“By establishing an innovation hub in San Francisco - where a significant portion of the world’s investment capital is concentrated - Georgian startups will have direct access to investors, significantly increasing their chances of securing funding. The hub will serve as a bridge for Georgian startups, innovators, and entrepreneurs to integrate into the global tech ecosystem. In the long run, we hope this initiative will promote mutual investments - not only attracting American capital to the region but also directing regional investments into the US market”, said Levan Kulijanishvili, Georgia’s Consul General in San Francisco.

To formalise the establishment of the technology hub, a memorandum of understanding will be signed between Georgia’s Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This agreement will strengthen cooperation between the two government agencies in advancing Georgia’s innovation ecosystem, IT sector, and investment-friendly initiatives.
